Greetings:
On January 26, 2015 I reminded you that the U.S. Senate Finance Committee, under the leadership of Senator Orrin Hatch (the Senior Senator from Utah) was working on the “Tax Reform” project. I continue to believe that the work of the Senate Finance Committee WILL lead to tax reform in the United States. Frankly, it’s reached the stage where the survival of the United States depends on it.
I also made it clear that Dr. Kish and I would be taking the initiative to “educate” the Committee about:
– what “citizenship taxation” really is; and
– the true effects that it has on “Americans” (recognizing that many of you do NOT consider yourselves to be U.S. citizens) in Canada and elsewhere.

I do not believe that that Congress is either malicious or vindictive. I do believe that they are ignorant and have been seduced by the “Myth Of The American Abroad”. The opposite of the truth is NOT the lie. The opposite of the truth is the “Myth”. Therefore, we must dispel the myths. We can achieve this only if you are willing to share your story. We can achieve this only if you can convey your pain, your fear, your terror, and how the policies of the U.S. Government have destroyed the lives of you and your families. They must understand that people are being forced to renounce their U.S. citizenship to protect themselves and their families from the tyranny of the U.S. government. The deadline is February 14, 2015.
February 14, 2015 – You are invited to come to Toronto Canada, where …
There will be a forum where you will be invited to speak directly to the Senate Finance Committee. You will have the opportunity to appear on camera. You will have the opportunity to describe in detail how difficult it is to both comply with the U.S. laws governing U.S. citizens abroad and have any kind of life. In other words, our goal is to create a number of video testimonials. (For those who are fearful of revealing your identities arrangements will be made so that your faces are obscured.) Each video testimonial will be paired with a written statement. We strongly urge you to participate in this. At the very least, Congress must understand that people are forced to renounce their U.S. citizenship as a defensive measure.
To put it simply: Congress must understand how the community of U.S. citizens abroad (the best ambassadors that America could ever have) is being destroyed. This is not about tax compliance. It’s not about accountants and lawyers. It’s not about academics. It’s not about partisan politics. It’s not about class warfare. It’s certainly not about tax evasion and offshore accounts. It’s not about a bunch of theoretical garbage. It’s about people.
It’s about people with real lives, who are trying to exercise their constitutional liberties to pursue happiness in the form they desire. Instead they are being forced to renounce (either formally or informally) their U.S. citizenship. It’s about the right of people to live normal lives. It’s about being able to “live as a U.S. citizen abroad”.
I am happy to report to you that on February 14, 2015 the videos were made as planned.
I am happy to report that on April 9, 2014 Dr. Kish and I met with representatives of the Senate Finance Committee and had a “productive discussion”.
I am happy to report that, today, April 15, 2015 our submission to the Senate Finance Committee (consisting of a total of 7 separate submissions on various topics) has been delivered. One of the submissions was the text of the “Human Rights complaint to the United Nations“. We acknowledge the tremendous work that went into the creation and submission of the complaint.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank those many individuals who helped (you know who you are) “make this happen”. In particular I wish to thank Trish Moon for the “beyond the beyond” incredible work that she contributed. (Have a look at the “Book of Comments of Americans abroad” to see PART of what I mean.)

I want to remind you that this is going to be a “slow process”. Be patient. Keep yourselves focused on the “long term” goal. The key is to remain patient and focused.

Group topics and co-chairs include:
1. Individual income tax – Sens. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) and Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.); Sen. Debbie Stabenow(D-Mich.);
2. Business Income Tax – Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.); Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.);
3. Savings and Investment – Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho); Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio);
4. International Tax – Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio); Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.); and
5. Community Development and Infrastructure – Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.); Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.).
Each group will analyze current law and examine policy trade-offs and available reform options within its designated topic area and will work directly with the nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) to produce an in-depth analysis of potential legislative solutions.
While these groups continue to work, Hatch and Wyden are soliciting ideas from interested members of the public and stakeholders on the committee’s ongoing tax reform efforts. The goal of this effort is for outside parties to provide additional input, data and information to the bipartisan working groups. Individuals, businesses, organizations, and advocacy groups interested in submitting comments should send an email to the below bipartisan group or groups that relates to their area of interest. Please send submissions to each group of jurisdiction if an interest area covers more than one group.

The findings and recommendations of each group will be compiled into a comprehensive report that is expected to be completed by the end of May. Submissions from stakeholders will be reviewed by the working groups and ideas can be incorporated into the each working group’s final recommendations. The five working group recommendations will be delivered to Chairman Hatch and Ranking Member Wyden and will serve as a foundation for the development of bipartisan tax reform legislation.

John, Stephen, Tricia and everyone else involved in this effort: My sincere and humble thanks to all of you for this mammoth effort and, particularly, for the 11th hour decision to include the text of the Human Rights Complaint. Now, after months of waiting, everyone can read what was submitted on their behalf to the world’s premier human rights organization. May all of this bring us the results we have been hoping for for so long.
